TOOTING BEC 4
WESTMINSTER CASUALS 3
Saturday 15 November 2008, SSEC Division One

GOAL: Skelly equalises from the spot
The Casuals were pleased to welcome back Dave Maunsell, Andy Barnett and Ian Hardy all missing from last week and competition for places was finally a problem for manager Joe Maughan. After last weeks convincing win the Casuals had their eyes on a second successive victory but ended with nothing after a game dominated by expensive mistakes.
The hosts were the first to show, when a poor clearance inside the box was tucked away by the Tooting striker after bobbling unkindly past Lofty.
After conceding the first goal for the 7th consecutive outing this season the Casuals sprang into life and dominated the remainder of the first half. Sam Holder was denied a penalty after being put through by Jim Paley, Maughan went agonisingly close with a half volley and John Skelly’s set pieces were a constant threat.
The equaliser deservedly came after Kit Welsh was held back in the area and Skelly continued his 100% record from the spot. The Casuals then took the lead when Skelly then put through Holder and his cross was coolly converted by Ian Hardy. From the restart the influential Skelly immediately regained possession and Hardy latched onto his long ball to beat the goalkeeper with a low shot from the edge of the area.
With a 3-1 lead at half time the Casuals were perfectly placed for another much needed 3 points but were guilty of over-elaboration and missed chances in the second half leaving the door open for Tooting.
The home team pulled a goal back after a long free kick into the area was misjudged by Lofty and floated into the top corner.
It began to look very ominous for the Casuals and basic defending went out the window and the midfield completely lost control of the game. The visitors equalised when their striker was allowed to dribble into the area and belt the ball past the helpless Lofty from six yards out.
Tooting continued to threaten and the Casuals were hanging on for the final whistle. It looked as though the match would head for a draw but in the last kick of the game the Tooting strike force broke free to joyously rifle the ball past the stunned Casuals defence.
It was a stunning fightback from Tooting and whilst they profited from some shocking defensive errors the Casuals could have no complaints after such an awful second half display.
Some better news in that the league have awarded us two points as Nutfield fielded an unregistered player in our 3-3 draw on 1st November.
This means we are now in 7th place in the league. If we had won on Saturday we would’ve gone second.
There is no game next weekend so we return to action on 29th November against CS United.
