GOALDEN GOAL: The Hobbit
As has sadly been the norm this season the Casuals travelled to Norbury with a number of key players missing. Goalkeeper Lofty was again unavailable, Young Dave travelled to Middlesbrough and Gaffer Geordie and Ollie were suffering from swine flu forcing Ollie to sit on the bench for the first time in his Casuals career.
Nevertheless, the visitors were in jovial mood and were eager to put in a good performance in the last game of a hard season. Ex ex Gaffer Phil Malcolm came into the side at the last minute to take the goalkeeping gloves and to make his 296th club appearance. It was Malcolm who came to the Casuals rescue when the lively Bahia forward was gifted the ball and then given time to pick his spot from inside the area. His rasping shot was acrobatically blocked with an outstretched claw and the ball rebounded onto the top of the crossbar. John Skelly came close to opening the scoring when he teed himself up to volley against the woodwork from 25 yards, and Ian Hardy shot wide from the edge of the area after some good play. However, as so often has been the case this season the Casuals were the first to concede when the ball escaped Malcolm?s grasp and was tapped in from 2 yards. Bahia doubled the lead on the hour when some ball watching gave their grateful striker time to slot past the ex ex Gaffer.
At this point, it was beginning to look like a case of how many but the Casuals pulled a goal back when the unusually subdued Sam Holder put through Skelly who calmly drilled a low shot past the oncoming goalkeeper.
An unlikely equaliser then came when a headed clearance fell to Holder who superbly volleyed the ball past the goalkeeper from the edge of the area and in doing so took himself to the top of the goalscorers chart and clinched himself the Goalden Boot. Surprisingly, the Casuals looked the more likely to nick a winner as the game petered out but could be pleased with a point at the final whistle.
