On a bright, frosty afternoon the Casuals took on fellow Richardson Evans tenants Puretown in the first of two back to back games.
Poor old Lushy missed kick off after getting onto a fast train to Portsmouth but there was a welcome return to the fold for Davey 'long lost' Mac fresh from injury, honeymoon and general mincing.
An even opening 20 minutes ensued with both sides enjoying some good possession. Puretown were denied a penalty from what looked a blatant handball from Brain and Ralphy saved well from a toe poke.
Jazz was as lively as ever, tirelessly leading the line with Thrisky while Stu and Grant were edging the midfield battle. There were few chances created for either side but the half ended with the Casuals having a good shout for a penalty denied when Lester's shot seemed to be blocked
by a hand.
Ollie was pleased with the first half performance and made one change with Adam swapping with Thirsky. During the interval Young Dave and Stu ditched their mittens. The gloves were really off.
The Casuals hoped to seize the initiative in the second half but a slow start saw Puretown take the lead when a ball into the box was flicked on and volleyed back towards the goal. Ralphy lost his footing as the ball cruelly looped over him.
Adam caused Puretown problems with his direct play and it was his strong running that won a free kick near the edge of the box. Lester whipped the ball into the box and some comedy defending from the leagues favourite left back led to him smashing the ball into his own net.
In the 75th minute the game took an unsavoury turn when a Puretown player raised his hands in reaction to a late tackle from the Toff. Whilst the Toff's challenge wasn't great he's clearly not a dirty player and did not merit such an overreaction. The referee dealt with the situation swiftly and sensibly by showing a red card to the Puretown player and chose not to send off another when he could easily have done so.
The Casuals took immediate advantage of the extra man and were disappointed not to capitalise fully. Young Dave did nod in at far post but the Casuals were denied the three points by a linesmans flag. It looked tight but the Casuals accepted the decision without much complaint.
This result leaves the two clubs level on points but Puretown have a game in hand and a far superior goal difference.
Next week these two teams clash in the second round of the Geoff Ellis Senior Shield.
