AFC EWELL V CASUALS PREVIEW
25 February 2010

John Skelly is hoping his team can build on their first consecutive victories since October as they take on AFC Ewell in the League Senior Cup Quarter Final this weekend.

The Casuals have endured some patchy form since November but wins recent wins against Weston Green Sports and South Godstone have reaffirmed the player manager?s belief that his team are capable of winning the clubs first silverware in 4 years.

"Bottom line is we all want to win this Cup this year - so this is the biggest game of our season so far" he said.

"You could see the appetite in the last round at Weston Green - everyone knows its a huge chance for us to win a trophy.  Plus the craic of big Cup Final Days is what its all about.  The Final this year is at Carshalton Athletic, which is a quality semi-pro ground. The lads, especially the regulars over the last few seasons, really deserve a taste of that.

"Our performance in the last round showed how determined we are to go all the way in this competition.  What we don?t want to do is let it all go to waste by taking our foot off the pedal this Saturday."

AFC Ewell are currently bottom of Division Two with just one win in 13 league games and were beaten 8-2 by Caterham Old Boys last weekend. However the Casuals will not be taking their opponents lightly haven already been knocked out of the Surrey Cup by a team at the wrong end of Div Two. Ewell beat South Godstone on penalties in the last round.

"Our defeat against Nutfield proved there are no easy games at this level and no team is just gonna roll over - especially not in a quarter final" said Skel.

"We can expect a tough physical game on Saturday and, first and foremost, we?ll need to win the physical battle.

"If we do that, continue to pass the ball as well as we have been doing, and put our chances away, it should be a great day. Cam on!"

Other confirmed quarter finals are Battersea v Old Plymouthians and Tooting Bec v Fulham Deaf with the other fixture TBC.

In other news, Skel has announced the WCFC January Player of the Month is Ian McMeckan.

The Green Giant was given the award for his performances v Puretown and Croygas. Both games in which he was far busier than we had hoped!

He said: "On a personal note I am honoured to receive this award.  All my hard work in training over the xmas period paid off in January, and I am sure if I keep providing lifts to the team I?m sure I?ll will win another award in the upcoming months.

"However, it?s all about the team, and I would much rather sacrifice personal glory for the sake of finishing top of the league and winning the cup." What a guy.
