PHIL MALCOLM TAKES UP PING PONG
Thursday 19 January 2012

We are saddened to report Westminster Casuals founder and former Gaffer Phil Malcolm has taken up table tennis.

That's right the Casuals 'Godfather', who is both the clubs record appearance holder and most successful manager of all time, now gets his kicks by playing ping pong - the sport of choice for Forrest Gump - against a 65 year old friend at Bracknell Leisure Centre.

The one time hellraiser and world renowned crabdancer has also revealed that he has finally hung up his boots following a series of back and Achilles injuries sustained in run outs for the Casuals towards the end of last season.

His spritely performance in the 20 year anniversary match at Woking, when only a string of fine Mark Ferris saves prevented him scoring a hatful, had whetted his appetite for a return to Vets football however two 90 minute appearances in Bridgend proved too much for his ageing limbs and laid him up for weeks.

Having since tipped the scales at 14 stone, his heaviest weight ever, the Casuals legend decided it was time to get in shape but rather than hit the gym or pound the streets he has decided to take up just about the nerdiest sport going.

"An hour of table tennis is a great work out" he enthused yesterday while taking time out from his successful stamp auctioneering business.

"The guy I play is quite decent so he soon has me getting a sweat on (so more pong than ping ? Ed).

"I am going to enter a local league to really test myself."

Despite being a relative newcomer to the sport, Phil's game is flourishing thanks to his defective short arm which allows him to impart several varieties of spin to the ball (albeit unintentionally), altering its trajectory and baffling the pensioner at the other end of the table.

His ultimate aim is a call up to the GB Paralympic table tennis team which would go some way to making up for the disappointment of ending his Casuals last Summer just four goals short of his century.
