GEORDIE RESIGNS
Tuesday 23 June 2009

We are sad to report that Joe Maughan has tendered his resignation as Westminster Casuals manager.
Geordie, 34, took up the managerial reins from Grant Payne last Summer and led the Casuals to an 8th placed finish in the Surrey South Eastern Combination Division One, the highest level the club has ever played at.
Joe spoke emotionally at this morning?s hastily arranged press conference at Richardson Evans and first recalled how his second coming as Casuals Gaffer came about.
"When Sam approached me last year and asked if I would take over from Paynee, my initial reaction was that it would be too much to take on" said the Barry Bulsara doppelganger.
"After my disastrous ten game spell in charge during the 2001/02 season, I had no desire to put myself through the hell of Tufnell Park once again. However, after giving it some thought and a change in my relationship status, I decided that I would give it a go and see what the season would bring.
"I didn't plan on playing much as I had not fully recovered from the knee injury I picked up in 2005, but was happy to commit to managing this great club and turning out on the odd occasion as and when injury and availability left us short of numbers.
"As it turned out, I was required to play far more than I anticipated. This was mainly down to a lack of availability. I understand that we play at an amateur level and I cannot expect that every player commit to play every game, but in the end the nucleus of 7/8 regulars was never going to be enough to challenge for any silverware - and sometimes was not enough to get a starting 11.
"After much soul searching and deliberation, I have decided that I cannot commit to another full year managing the team and resign with immediate effect."
2008/09 was Joe's testimonial season, and he has made a grand total of 111 appearances and scored 13 goals since first pulling on the shirt back on 29th January 2000. In this time he got his hands on plenty of silverware including the KDFL Div 2 Championship trophy, Teck Intermediate Cup, KDFL Div 1 title and Teck Senior Cup but the biggest highlight of all has to be his key role at the heart of the back four in our unforgettable treble winning season in capped by the 2004/05 Surrey Cup success.

WINNER: Geord with the KDFL Div One trophy
"I really hope that the club can continue for many years to come but unfortunately, for me, it is time to draw a line under my Casuals career." Be warned Joe, as many have found to their cost there really is no escape...
"I would like to thank everyone that put so much into running the club last year, especially Sam, the real dynamo behind the Casuals, you have my best wishes for the 2009/2010 season and beyond."
The Casuals would like to thank Joe for 10 years of blood, sweat and beers and wish him every success for the future. If a yard of ale replaces the 10k run in the triathlon as has been reported we look forward to seeing him strike gold in 2012. A great club man and enthusiastic tourist we are sure we have not seen the last of Bulsara.

RABBIT: Always the shy, retiring type
Ex ex Gaffer (now ex ex ex Gaffer) Phil Malcolm has announced that he will not be making a Lazarus style return to bottom flight management due to work commitments. Stamp collectors are clearly immune to the credit crunch.
We are currently looking at options but in the meantime Club captain John Skelly and Sam Holder will take responsibility for close season transfer dealings and organising pre-season training. Details of the pre-season schedule has been emailed to all players and the new season kicks off on 5th September.
